The Best of Radio Free Bubba
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Holocene Pub/Hub City Writers (01 November, 1998)
Authors: Meg Barnhouse, Gary Phillips, Wanda Lu Greene, Pat Jobe, and Kim Taylor
Average review score:

Best darned book this teen's ever read
I had the privilege of reading the first ever copy of The Best of Radio Free Bubba as it came from Pat"Bubba"Jobe's computer. This book had me rolling in a hurricane of laughter for two solid hours. I finally had to stop while the second half of the book printed, and I was afraid that if I didn't go to the bathroom soon, I would wet myself! I recommend this book to anyone who can read, including teens like myself. :)

A real pick-me-up on those "dark" days.
This book is a joy and delight. Of course it helps to be able to identify somewhat with down-home Southern culture, but most readers will be able to relate to the writers' wisdom and humor no matter where they're from.

At Last Real Bubbas!
Finally, the world can get to know some real "Bubbas." With the publication of "The Best of Radio Free Bubba" by the Hub City Writers Project, the South has unleashed a powerful force and sent it out to create havoc among the prejudiced. For those of us who have been listening for years to "Radio Free Bubba" on WNCW in Spindale, N.C., the book holds no surprises, just 170 pages of some of the best essays we've already heard by four writers who believe in people. Meg Barnhouse, Pat Jobe, Kim Taylor and Gary Phillips share their thoughts on everything from blister packs to making lists. The book's philosophy is summed up by a bumper sticker: "It's Not Up To Somebody Else." Here in the South, we know that "Bubba" is short for "Brother," or rather it's the sound small children make when they call to that older sibling who looks out for them, protects them and teases them. Bubba is the real "good ol' boy" who will haul your furniture in her pickup, pull your car out of the ditch with his tractor, take care of your children in times of distress, and pray for your body and soul.

Grief Dancers: A Journey into the Depths of the Soul
Published in Paperback by Nemo Pr (October, 1996)
Authors: Susan Zimmermann, Alice Phillips, and Helen Phillips
Average review score:

TOUCHING THE SOUL..........
I just re-read this book. It is one of the most valuable books for parents, teachers and those who deal with crisis in their life-- which probably means all of us. The author writes poetically of one of the greatest challenges anyone can have --coming to terms with what life gives you. A lawyer, lecturer, teacher and parent, Zimmerman's book goes well beyond talking about the challenges of raising a handicapped daughter and its impact on her family, friends and others. She bares her soul to reveal how you can create a valuable life day by day. Her vitality, her wisdom and her sensitivity are a gift to the world. She writes cinematically and this deserves to be shared with the world. I had the good fortune to meet Zimmerman and she touches everyone she meets with her kindness and warmth. How to go on in the darkest of hours, how to live life to the fullest despite obstacles, hurdles and no guarantees.

It will leave you laughing, crying, and will touch your soul
This book touched me deeply because I can relate so closely to how Susan was feeling while raising a daughter with Rett syndrome. Her book takes you not only through her daughter's struggles and challenges but it alsotouches your heart as you begin to see how Susan grows with her own realization of how wonderful life can be with a child with special needs.

What others say about Grief Dancers...
"I have spent most of the day reading Grief Dancers, and am awed by its honesty and beauty. It's a wonderful book, and I wish it could be required reading." Madeleine L'Engle, Newbery Award winning author. "Susan Zimmermann portrays, with honesty, passion and wisdom, a chapter of her life that is both deeply terrifying and wholly inspiring. It is a story of loss and gain, pain and joy, and -- above all -- profound truth. It is a story with the power to change your life." T.A. Barron, author of Heartlight, The Ancient One, and The Merlin Effect. "Susan Zimmermann has written a book about her daughter, but also a book about each of us -- the fragile, damaged, but insistently precious part deep inside, that refuses to be cast off. To read these pages is to be reminded of the value of life itself. I have rarely been so moved." Swanee Hunt, former U.S. Ambassador to Austria.

In the South Bronx of America
Published in Hardcover by Curbstone Press (2001)
Authors: Mel Rosenthal, Grace Paley, Martha Rosler, and Barry Phillips
Average review score:

Well Done and Long Overdue Treatment of This Topic
I'd strongly recommend Mr. Rosenthal's work to anyone who is interested in the devastation suffered by those in the South Bronx during the 1970's and 1980's as well as those who have an interest in "urbicide."

Based on what was available, I felt for a long time that there was a great gap in books available on the Bronx; either they spoke of the grand old days or focused solely on the destructive elements of the Bronx experience. Or, in other words, there was little on the lives of those who were trying to make a "go" of the place, despite the inexorable forces arrayed against them.

Mr. Rosenthal's work fills that gap in a diligent and eloquent manner.

Excellent Photojournalism
Rosenthal has produced an excellent book about one of New York's most troubled neighborhoods.Working in the South Bronx for many years I've witnessed firsthand the struggles of area residents against the tide of arson and crime.Rosenthal's photographs tell the story of the survival of the human spirit in one of the most devastated areas in the country and the efforts to rebuild it.

REVIEW QUOTES
"Not since Eudora Welty photographed rural Mississippi in the 1930s has anyone caught so memorably a people and a place as Mel Rosenthal has done in this unforgettable record of the South Bronx." --Willimam Jay Smith, former Poet Laureate of the United States and author of The Cherokee Lottery

"Rosenthal's disturbing stories and portraits of life in this neighborhood during the 1970s and 1980s are the work of an activist's committed lens, revealing how public money does not always result in public progress." --Doubletake

"Rosenthal's protraits convey the still vibrant life of a community hurtling toward ruin." --Erin Christman, Ruminator Review

"The photographer doesn't just give readers the clichés of burned buildings and homeless people. We see the richness and complexity of life that the South Bronx supported, even during its darkest day, and that may be the book's most significant accomplishment." --Damaso Reyes, The New York Amsterdam News

"Whatever historians may conclude about factors involved in the deterioration of the South Bronx, the juxtaposition of photographs of burned out buildings with vibrant portraits of South Bronx residents makes Rosenthal's book a provocative historical and sociological document." --Leslie Cohen, The Jerusalem Post

The Jook
Published in Hardcover by The Do-Not Press (July, 2002)
Author: Gary Phillips
Average review score:

Non stop! I loved the Jook
Realisitic characters that you love to hate and hate to love, Gary Phillips brings them to life with a descriptive style that few could match. The non stop twists and turns in this book kept me turning pages and the descriptions were so vivid I could almost smell the garbage truck! Best of all, I wasn't cheated at the end, Mr. Phillips kept it real.

The spirits of Goines, Himes, and Thompson live on
I haven't read any of Phillips' previous books but this one is compulsively readable. The protagonist is not particularly likeable (he's a sexist, for one) but he has his redeeming qualities (loyalty to his friends), and many of the people he runs into are worse than he is. He's a complex character, a has-been who had it all and threw it away and is trying for a comeback, or if not that, just to survive. If you want an enjoyable read that has sex, violence, drugs, sports, and the inevitable LAPD, pick up this book.

Phillips creates an unforgetable antihero
Phillips' first crime novel easily outdoes his previous books. I'm an admitted fan of his Ivan Monk mysteries (especially Violent Spring), but the author's real calling was creating this volatile character, Zelmont Raines, a has-been football star trying to get his game back. Full of action, suspense, and intriguing conflict, The Jook is easily the best book I've read all year (sorry Oprah). If Hollywood had any sense, The Jook would be next year's Christmas blockbuster.

Knitting Counterpanes: Traditional Coverlet Patterns for Contemporary Knitters
Published in Hardcover by Peter Smith Pub (June, 1991)
Author: Mary W. Phillips
Average review score:

A classic with a twist
Don't think this book is just for knitting bedspreads in white cotton like Grandmom had on her bed in Topeka. No indeed, though you'd be lucky to own such a heirloom and be even more lucky to decide to make one.

You can use these squares and edgings for so much more. For example, the squares can be made into frons of sweaters and tunics for very original textured effects. Of course they also make good afghans from thicker wool. Or pillows. You choose, there are so many options.

I like looking at the squares just for the inventiveness and incredible variety. This is one of my all-time favorite knitting books for getting design inspiration.

i haven't started yet...
I haven't started one yet, but I have every intention of knitting a counterpane from this book that I can pass on to my children and grandchildren. Yes, I have every intention of knitting an heirloom. This book is inspiring, and there is no other word for it.

The patterns in this book are beautiful, easy to follow (I haven't started my counterpane, but I have knitted singles of a few of these patterns), and full of tradition. And, really, you don't have to knit an entire counterpane. Knit six or eight and have a placemat, or just knit different ones to learn traditonal and beautiful stitches. This book can be fun too, as well as inspiring!

A Classic
Engaging and throughly researched, this is a favorite in my Knitting library. The photographs are beautiful and the patterns are very easy to follow whatever your level of expertise. I recommend to any one considering knitting a blanket or throw. With this book you will create an heirloom.

Lady of the Knight (Harlequin Historical, No. 476)

Thank you again Tori!!
Tori Phillips is a wonderful author! It is a delight to read the story of Andrew and Rose. The book is a prequel to Silent Knight and MidSummer's Knight but it takes place after Three Dog Knight. It is wonderful how Tori ties in all the other Cavendish characters into her books! A must read!

A MUST READ!
This book was extraordinary! I love the character Rose. She was great with her strong spirit. She made the story a humorous one. I hope Ms. Phillips write a sequel to Rose and Andrew's story.

Phillips does it again!
Tori Phillips keeps writing some of the best romance around! If you want to read a book that keeps your eyes pasted to the page, then this is the book for you! It is so funny and heart-warming it brought me to tears! This book will stay on the keeper shelf for years to come!

A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (December, 1999)
Authors: Steven J. Phillips, Patricia Wentworth Comus, Ariz.) Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (Tucson, and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Average review score:

Scholarly
Subjects are thoroughly covered and the information is written in an friendly and interesting manner. If you have a question about the Sonoran Desert, you will most likely find the answer here. Among other surprises, this book offered my first look at the "creeping devil cactus" - how interesting! I'd never even heard of it before. "A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert" is a book you will turn to for detailed information that can be trusted as well as entertainment. Very nice photographs and illustrations. A great book for a nature lover, even if the Sonoran Desert holds no particular interest to them.

Armchair nature watching
This is the ideal book to take along on trips to the Sonora Desert. Whether it is the Cailfornian , including Baja, Arizonian(it actually covers five states) or Mexican portions of the vast and diverse Sonara Desert, the details and complexities of this eco system are truly amazing. This book is an indespensible guide to all facets of this immense gift, including the many plants and animals that inhabit this harsh yet bountiful environment. It is a book to read before, as well as after the trips to the desert. Since it is so diverse and vast , covering some 100, 000 sq.mi., the amount of information given is quite a bit but done in such a mannner that one can easily navigate the text to the desired area of interest Inevitably one will stray into an area of new found interest. The little known facts are a lay persons path to knowledge about what the heck they just saw or are about to see. The black and white illustrations for the plants and animals you will or did encounter are excellent and extremely helpful for identification. There is a section with color photographs as well to further illustrate the beauty of the Sonora Desert. With contributions by some thirty five different experts in their pespective field this book is the ultimate guide. Do not hesitate to buy this book if you are visting the Sonora Desert as it will prove to be a valuble reference tool that can be used over and over. Since there is so much to learn about the Sonora Desert and it's inhabitants, this book can be read anytime, anywhere since it is nearly impossible to experience it all. Recommended for the tourist, naturalist or anyone interested in learning more about the 2000 species of plants, 550 species of verbrates and thousands of unknown invertebrate species who make the Sonora Desert home. This is truly fascinating material that only nature can provide so don't hesitate to purchase this book.

The Art of Managing People
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (August, 1980)
Authors: Phillip L. Hunsaker and Philip Hunsacker
Average review score:

Shelf Help
I purchased this book because in my job I encounter various personalities every day. Some of these personalities are something else and make work difficult for everyone. I wanted some ideas on what to do and how to help everyone involved with these difficult people. This book has offered some good ideas that I am willing to put into practice...who know where it could lead.

Management made understandable!
Finally! A book that puts managing in perspective. Cudos to Dr. Phillip Hunsaker and Dr. Anthony Alessandra. This book is well written and easy to absorb all the principles and theories. It covers all the bases and is up to date.

Helps me understand myself so I can better manage others
I've read at least 7 other books on managing others: the motivating team leader, how to supervise people, the 10 steps to empowerment, team building is not a one-minute ..., but this book is unique in that it doesn't only provide some checklists for how to proceed, but it also covers behavioral, personality, and decision making styles. It helped me identify my styles and preferences, and told me what to watch out for when interacting with others. I spent weeks reading other guides, but this I highly recommend.

Please feel free to email me if you'd like more insight into this book.

Metallica Master of Puppets: Guitar - Vocal/Item No 7920
Published in Paperback by Cherry Lane Music (June, 1988)
Authors: Mark Phillips and Metallica
Average review score:

watch it
Much like any tablature book on the market, you have to take the info within the book with a grain of salt.
These tabs are not transcribed by the actual musicians, but by people trying to figure out the easiest way to play these songs.
With that in mind - upon viewing the S&M video, I discovered that "The Thing that Should Not Be" is not in drop-D tuning as the book says, but rather in standard tuning tuned down a whole step (much like "Sad but True" or "Whiskey in the Jar" or "Sabbra Cadabra")- as far as I can tell, the only Drop-D tuning song that the mighty metallica does is "-human" from the afore-mentioned S&M.
these books are great to help you through trouble spots when you are trying to figure out certain difficult passages, but nothing beats figuring it out for yourself.
Still... could not have figured out some of the parts from this momentous album without the help of this book (especially considering what a novice I was when I first bought this - remember kids - downstrokes only... otherwise you won't be as cool as your Uncle James)

Yet Another Review...
The Master tab book is definitely a must-buy for not only the avid Metallica muso-fan, but for those wishing to upskill themselves in various guitar techniques.

As mentioned elsewhere, take all tabs with a grain of salt, however, the solos are a near-enough note-by-note transcription and each riff is intricately tabbed to include even the most subtle of variations.

Includes a very well-written introduction, outlining some very important and helpful tips to assist you in your mastery of one of Metllica's finest albums.

In a one-line verdict: A definite must-have, even as a collector's item!

Keep chugging along, cherry lane
Sometimes, you can find tablature on the net that isn't always accurate, but you know that these cherry lane books are gonna sound right, cause they are!

A Meteor Shining Brightly: Essays on Maj. Gen Patrick R. Cleburne
Published in Hardcover by Terrell House Pub (May, 1998)
Authors: Maureil P. Joslyn, Mauriel Phillips Joslyn, and Wiley Sword
Average review score:

Great read
Being a non-historian (this is the only history book I've read cover to cover in 7 years), I was initially dreading reading this book. However, its well-organized format, its to-the-point style (to which almost all of the authors ascribed), and its information were incredible. This is an enjoyable read. FYI, I also sent an e-mail to the author of the book as I was tracking down Cleburne's original work, and she very graciously replied within a day, informing me that his work was at the University of Arkansas. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Brilliant book about one of the best Confederate Generals!
This book does an excellent job telling about Patrick Cleburne. It is not a day by day biography of Cleburne, instead, it tells the stories that help us understand Cleburne better, from a drowning incident in the Mississippi to Chattanooga where Cleburne was the only one to hold his ground. This book is a must for all history lovers.

A "must-read" edition to your Civil War library.
Until I devoured this masterpiece, I thought it impossible for anyone to surpass Purdue's text on Pat Cleburne. Well researched and well written, so much so that even the Civil War novice will thoroughly comprehend Cleburne's battlefield brilliance. Someday history will place Cleburne in his proper place among great leaders and humanitarians. When it happens, this compilation of essays will have paved the way.
